She did it!!!

Tomorrow my eldest niece H.  is going to receive her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award at St James Palace.  H., my sister and B-in-L are travelling down to London this evening.  Sadly my sister will have to wait outside while the ceremony is taking place because tickets are limited to one per family.  Fortunately she attended the ceremony a few years ago with one of her students - so she says that she will be able to imagine everything again as H. receives her certificate.

I think I've mentioned previously that H's sixth form years have been 'difficult' for a whole host of reasons.  There were times when she didn't look as if she was going to be well enough to complete at least one of the expeditions - and she has always been very loyal volunteer at a local respite centre for very handicapped youngsters.  As a result, I'm a very proud Auntie!!

Next Saturday evening all the family are coming here for a celebratory meal.  I'm planning plenty of gold decorations but it's harder to come up with 'gold- themed' food.
All suggestions welcomed!!!

  1. Many congratulations to your niece, I know it takes a lot of commitment and stamina to get the gold award, she's done really well. What a shame her mum is unable to see her receive her certificate, I think that's awful. If they're unable to allocate two tickets to each person then they should cut down on the number of people at each ceremony to make room. I'm sure you'll all have a wonderful time celebrating next week, take a look at my Golden Wedding Hamper post, you'll find lots of gold themed food listed there.

  5. Congratulations to your niece!!!

How gold do you want to go? Can you claim orange-ish as well? Saffron risotto, squash diced and roasted like Nigella does, coronation chicken, and gold coins, lots and lots of gold coins!!!!

  6. Congrats to your niece and such an achievement. I know I've heard of the gold award but being in Oz, I'm not up to scratch on what it is exactly for, though I do have some idea. Gold food is hard to conjure up, but of course pumpkin is gold coloured and with halloween coming up they should be in good supply over there. Look forward to seeing what you do. Take care.

  8. WELL DONE to your NIECE H. What an achievement and something she can dine out on for years to come. I think pumpkins should be on the menu and I believe you can buy edible gold for about £5 a sheet and gold cake spray. My eldest daughter used to make lots of cakes. A little fleck here and there would look stunning. Enjoy your party.

  11. Well done her! Mr D was there today as a teacher of gold DofE. It's a proud moment for the teachers too. Our eldest completed hers but never bothered going to the ceremony - much to our frustration and annoyance! Still hopefully we will have two graduations of hers to attend.....

  12. Well done! What an achievement :) How about rather than trying to make the food gold, go for gold decor - serviettes, candles, serving dishes, glitter :)
